Civil Society begins with people going out and talking to their neighbours… Our experiment aims to prove that locally focused Independent Online Media can be a new thread to stitch diverse communities together.
Relevant to our Community
In that vein, Portsea Islander supports Portsea Island by providing useful community information, independent local journalism, as well as in time, an accessible online marketplace for local creative individuals and groups, businesses and charities.
Consolidation of traditional media sources under ever bigger national and international corporate umbrellas means that the old ‘local newspaper’ concept often struggles to really connect with it’s audience, as print distributions fall away publishers lose their local roots and locals lose thier voice.
Accessible Visibility
Mentioning no names, websites associated with ‘Local News’ brands are often very generic and sometimes settle for poor quality content, that is only distantly relevant to it’s stated audience.
Plus, weighed down with mountains of cross publication advertising inventories, local news websites generally leave very little affordable ad space for local advertisers to reach out to potential local customers…
So, we believe that this dramatic consolidation in local media has left a big hole in the landscape of many towns and cities, including and especially Portsea Island, a hole that is most effectively filled by online, hyper local community publications like Portsea Islander.
